Finding the right time to say goodbye

Finding the right time

One of the most common questions vets are asked is “when is the right time to say goodbye?” It can also be the most difficult to answer - our emotions can feel at odds with the physical evidence and practical signs telling us that our companions are no longer enjoying a good quality of life.

Quality of life is best judged by how content your pet is. Think back to a time when they were really happy, and at their most vital. Consider how many of their favourite things they are still able to do now. It might help to keep a diary to record good and bad days – reviewing this will highlight if the bad days are becoming more common.

In our experience, delaying the decision at this stage does not make things any less upsetting for you, although sadly it might increase your pet’s discomfort and cause them further distress.

This quality of life assessment may help with you decision making: Quality of life assessment

At Paws in Peace we believe that in making the difficult decision to ease your pet’s passing, you are reflecting all the unconditional love your pet has shown you throughout their life.

This is a decision you must make for them, incredibly painful as it is.

It’s hard because you love them.

You are not alone. Animals have evolved to be very good at hiding pain and so we must be sure to fully consider the extent of any deterioration to their individual circumstances and abilities. Kate, our compassionate and experienced vet, can guide and advise you here, helping you feel confident that the time is right to say goodbye.

Always remember, you are not changing the outcome, just helping to make it peaceful, painless and dignified
